Olympics Day at MHP

We had a fantastic day celebrating the Olympics at school. Each learning Zone adopted a country to learn about for 2 weeks and then we played tabloid sports to see who could win the gold, silver and bronze medal overall in the whole school for showing the Olympic values. The ASB kindly donated some real medal to us. Ms Baker made this fantastic video below to summarise the day.

The Fox

This term we are focusing on writing descriptions of a moment in time. We are reading The Robber Fox as our shared book and have been learning about foxes. A baby fox is called a kit. Here are some of our descriptions of the picture below.
The little red kit is timid because Mum is out hunting. The kit is waiting on the grass. Its tummy is grumbling. The kit is looking for bugs. By Koda

The kit is waiting for its Mum. The cute kit is in a log. It is hungry. It is brown, orange and black. The grass is tickling its paws. There are lillies growing, also red roses. By Katie

There was a little brown orange kit in a wooden brown log. He was timid and scared. The kit was very lonely because his mother had gone hunting. You can tell because of his snout. He was guarding the wooden log because it was his home. By Danna

A picnic description

On a beautiful sunny day, a family of four went out for a picnic in the park. The girl threw the ball and Mum caught it. The ball was blue, red and orange. Then after playing with the ball, the family started to eat crunchy apples and when they were thirsty, they had orange juice in a yellow cup. Dad was lying down on the green grass. He heard birds singing up in the blue sky. By Barleen

One summer morning, a family of four went for a picnic at the park. They heard the wind blowing through the trees. They saw people playing cricket. They smelt the beautiful fresh grass. Their mother is throwing a red, orange and blue ball. By the boy is a green ball that is light green and dark green. The little girl is giggling because her mum is throwing the ball high up in the blue sky. By Maisarah

In the holidays....

I went to the zoo. I saw the tigers down in the bottom. The tigers were sleeping. Afterwards I went to look at the other bits of the zoo. They were wonderful. By George

In the holidays, I went to the museum. I was very excited. I saw many guns. I even saw dinosaur bones. First we all went to buy tickets. The tickets were for donation. My Mum and my Mum's parents came. We were wandering around like birds. Next we made masks. There were lots of wooden carved animals. After that we saw creepy snakes in jars. They looked like they were real. I saw what famous people used to help them to walk. I had fun. By Danna

On Saturday Mum and Dad went out shopping. They were buying groceries. Then they found a spot near a shop that was giving away aprons for free and my parents got two, one for my brother and one for me. They were red and there were pictures of food. There was a cookbook and a vivid pen. My Mum bought play money for us to play with. By Maisarah

Mamma Mia! We Made Pizza!

On Wednesday we made pizzas. First we had to mix the yeast with sugar and warm water and wait 15 minutes for it to rise. Then we added flour and salt to make a dough. We put sauce and cheese on our pizzas and cooked them. They tasted delicious!

Science in a van

Science in a Van came to visit us last Friday. We learnt a lot about bubbles. Shavaughn got to hold a pet bubble filled with Carbon Dioxide which made it heavy enough to sit in her hands without popping. We also so bubbles filled with helium which floated straight to the ceiling.

Weekend Recounts

On Saturday Mum and Dad went shopping and I stayed at home with my two brothers and my sister. I played blocks and made a tiny ship. Then my brother and I did some work. After that, my brother and I were playing again. I was so hungry that my tummy was grumbling a lot. I ate some food. By the time I was finished, Mum and Dad came home. I helped Dad to carry the food. By Maisarah

On Saturday I got a new skateboard. It was black and red and blue. My uncle bought it for me. After I got kneepads and a helmet. Then I went to the skatepark. I did flips. Then I went back home. I ate popcorn and we watched movies. Then I went to eat my dinner. By Koda

Yesterday my Mum, Dad, brother and me went for a long walk. We walked all the way to the hill. The view was lovely. I was a little tired. My Mum and Dad decided that we needed to go a little further. So we started to walk and my little brother was lucky because he could sit in his seat. On the way I picked some yellow flowers. The flowers were as yellow as the sun. I gave them to my brother. My legs hurt after the walk. By Danna

Roti and Poojas

Kanav's mum and dad made some roti and pooja for us to try. They are Indian breads eaten as a snack or with a meal. They do not have yeast in them, so are flat.

Monster Cats

Last week our Big Book was about Mrs P who had a broken catch on her gate. She wrote 'beware of the cat' and ran out of paint so she could not finish the word. Her neighbours thought there was a monster cat and ran away scared.

Fapapa

Juanye's Mum made Fapapa (coconut bread) for us to try as part of our Integrated Studies learning focus on wheat and bread. We looked at how coconuts grow and what they can be used for. Did you know coconuts have many uses such as for cosmetics like shampoo, for cooking food, as an oil, as decorations around the home or as part of costumes for dancing and you can even drink the water it holds inside it.
Coconuts are fruit. They can be used for lots of things like bowls and cooking oil. To make Fapapas you need to mix sugar, flour, water and coconut cream. The Fapapas felt stodgy and hard. They looked yellow and gold. By Katie

On Monday LZ4 tried Coconut Bread. It actually tastes like normal bread. Coconuts are brown on the outside and white inside. Coconuts can be used for decoration. By Kiran

Our hens

On Thursday we painted hens! We used a few different browns to create shadow. Then we painted the beak and legs. We blended pastels to create the background.

This little hen....

This week we wrote poems about hens in a farm which were different colours and liked to do different things. We then illustrated our poems using watercolour pencils and used water to paint.

Boss Parrot Prints

Last week in Art we learnt how to do printing. We made a template from cardboard, then had to roll paint on the template and print onto coloured paper. They worked out quite well for our first try!

Term 2 Week 3 Excellence Award

Well done to Frank who is growing in his confidence to use English at school.

Making Smoothies

Last week we researched on the internet how to make a smoothie. We had to invent our own recipes. We had to include a banana to thicken our smoothie. Some recipes had marshmallows, chocolate Nesquik, canned strawberries and milk. Yummy!

A Huntsman spider came to visit

Today Mrs Gage next door saw a spider and asked our teacher to help her because she was scared of it. Now Ms K is also scared of spider, but feeling brave went to have a look. It was big. Very big. It was as big as an ID card which  is at least 8cm long!

Welcome to Koda

We have another new student joining us this week. Koda has been living in Perth, Australia and is now part of the Munchkin crew.

Term 2 Holiday recounts

I was at my home. I was watching the computer. Then my big sister came. She was downloading a game for us called Mugen. When it was loading, she was watching Facebook. By Anshveer

In the holidays me and my family friends went to Whitianga beach. There was a shipwreck so the kids weren't allowed to swim there. Me and my family dug a hole in the sand so the water could go in the hole. By Diya

In the holidays, I went to the pools. I stayed for a long time until it was night time. Then I went back home to watch the pirate movie. By Juanye

In the exciting holidays, I went to the big shop called Number One Shoes because on Monday school was going to start. So me and my Mum and Dad, found some shoes that were super big and super small. Then they found good ones which were size 11. Then on Sunday, I went to the humongous store and I bought some hair bands and one mirror. By Victoriana

Ms K as a 9 year old.

This is a video of our teacher when she was nine years old. She had a lisp and so had elocution lessons to iron it out. Now she speaks properly! This poem is by Ogden Nash.

Reflections and symmetry

Our big book this week is called Reflections. We have been learning about reflections and mirror symmetry. It is very hard to draw the mirror image of shapes. It was fun finding reflection around the school. Did you know the writing on an ambulance has mirror imagery so when driver's look in their mirror they can read the words?

Yr 5's Save the Whio Initiative

The Yr 5s came up with a plan to raise money for the Blue Duck or Whio which is endangered. If you look at a blue $10 note you will see the Blue Duck. If it is important enough to be on our currency, it must be worth raising money to save! Today there was a blue cupcake sale in the hall and there is a chocolate egg raffle. We wonder how much money they will raise?

The Polkadots came to visit us

On Friday, the Polkadots came to school to promote being travelwise. We learnt to 'beat our feet', do crazy walks and that walking to school is healthy and good for us. We all received a CD of the music to keep. Thank you to Ms Baker for making a video of the performance.
