The kiwi that spoke

We listened to the story The Papaya that spoke recited by Warminster Prep in England on their blog http://year3wps.wordpress.com/. Over the last two days we have created our own versions of the story. We had a lot of fun practising and trying to remember the story as it is quite long. We hope you enjoy Connor and Liam's version.

Grandparents' Day

Today was Grandparents' Day. We had an assembly to showcase some of the things we do at school. We bet our school is very different to when our grandparents went to school. We made certificates for our grandparents. Ben's paternal grandparents came and Niskil and Connor's Grandmas came to visit our class and share a picnic.

Scary Stories

Whenever I go to the amusement park my little brother makes me go to the Haunted House. It was dark and scary. There was a car. In the car, there was a flashlight and I picked it up and I pushed the button. The light went on. The car started to move very fast! I screamed. Then we came back. I thought it was a dream and my brother was crying. By Liam

Whenever I go to the amusement park I make my sister go in the freaky deadly haunted house. Suddenly there was a boney skeleton glowing in the darkness. Next my sister needed to go to the toilet but there were no toilets. We heard a ghoul noise. It was a scary ghost. Then we went into a guardian palace. Next it was all over. By Michael

Whenever I go to the amusement park my brother makes me go to the Haunted House. We sit in a little carriage. We went through a big massive gigantic door which had a big deadly Australian spider on it. There was a little skeleton drawing with vampire's blood. We looked the other way and saw a bat carrying a person's head! There was a silver ghost which was singing “IF YOU DARE GO TO THAT ROOM WITH THAT BIG BROOM, YOU WILL HAVE YOUR HEAD CUT TO PIECES.” Suddenly the cart raced so fast because zombies were chasing us. Next we came to a dead end. We ran a bit. Suddenly we fell into a hole and landed on something soft. It went forwards a bit into the sunlight and the ride was finally over! By Connor

Connor is Player of the Year 2010 and 2011!

Connor plays soccer on Sundays at Howick Soccer Club. His team is called United Fencibles. His shirt is black and orange. He went to prize-giving and was awarded a medal for being the Player of the Year for 2011! Well done Connor.

Exposition writing

Today we tried our hand at exposition writing. This is when you write to present your point of view. Our subject was whether we thought PE kits were a good idea or not. 17 people thought PE kits were a good idea and 3 thought they were a bad idea. In our school all students from Yr1-6 have to change into their PE kit for fitness and sport.

I think students should have P.E. kits because when you do Jump Jam and you are wearing your uniform it can smell a lot. If you don't wear your P.E. kit and you are doing exercises you might get holes in your uniform. I think schools should have P.E. kits.    By Michelle

I think students should have P.E. kits because if you get very super sweaty you can get changed and be alright. It is thin so you don't get super hot. You can use it to not get as sweaty as Jetipeti. It is part of our school uniform so we have to wear it.  By Connor

Romanian Art: Costel Larca

Romanian artist Costel Iarca captured attention on the international art scene for a patented application technique that leaves the canvas textured and three-dimensional. This procedure involves layering latex caulk and acrylic paint, giving depth and definition to the surface of his unique abstract and figurative paintings. We used one of his pictures to inspire our own creations. Didn't we do an awesome job? Come visit LZ4 to see our portraits.

Cross Country

Ms Koltonowska's Yr 2's have WON the cross country in 2009 and 2010. The pressure was on. This year Mellisa came 1st for the Yr3 girls and Harshil came 2nd for Yr 3 boys race. Connor came 2nd for the Yr 2 boys race. Well done my champions. One gold and two silver medals is an awesome result from 19 students who ran. For everyone who crossed the finish line- well done! We are a winning team.

Howick Historical Village recounts...

At school we came in and packed our bags and the bus came. Then we climbed on to it and we drove to Howick Historical Village. Only the people who are 6 and 7 could go. We played with wooden horses, stick, bowling and stilts. We explored the village. We saw tents, shops and wooden things. There were old places. We made butter with Mrs Pots. We ate butter with crackers.  By Andre


Yesterday LZ4, LZ1, LZ6 and LZ5 went to the Howick Historical Village. First LZ4 and LZ1 went to make butter. We saw how Mrs Pots made the butter. First there was cream inside the glass and we sang a song, but on cold days the cream takes a long time to turn into butter.      By Amisha


On Tuesday 2011, the Yr 2s went to the Howick Historical Village. It was old, cold, different and fragile. It was cold and damp. My favourite past was when Mrs Hill taught us some outside games like bowling, wooden horses, triple sticks, stilts and skipping. To me, the bowling was the super best. Our holidays

One rainy afternoon Ricky, AJ, Mum, my sister and me went to Botany movie theatre. We watched Cars 2. We were in the very front row. It was a movie about top agents. There was a naughty professor who was trying to take over the world but Flinn was an agent. He was stopping those dumb dumb babies. They were good at making machines go nuts. It was awesome. My sister did not like it. We had popcorn and it was yummy.   By Connor


One sunny day, I went to Myah's house in the afternoon. When I got to her house I was really excited. I got my cool fairy dress and Myah has the same one. Myah's parents were also there too. Libby is Myah's mum and Andy is Myah's dad. Myah and me enjoyed playing so much we started to get hungry and a bit bored. So we ate some cheese in bread and we watched Beauty and the Beast. In a while, the doorbell rang and it was my dad and he said "come on Tanisha we have to go home." When I got home I said to my parents I has a great time at Myah's house and I enjoyed it so so much. One windy morning, my family went to the cinemas. We wanted ti watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. My family needed to wait because we were early. i was starving. We tried again and we went inside and it was loud. We sat in the middle. It was scary. I was eating popcorn, chips and Coke. The screen was so light but all around it was dark. The seats were nice. Race to Reading Challenge

Over the past term we have been participating in a Race to Reading challenge. We had to read a library book on top of our normal reading homework. The top three people won a prize and a certificate. Well done Harshil, Ben and Connor! Our boys love reading the most.

St George and the dragon

Today we learnt the English legend about St George and the Dragon. The English flag is a red cross on a white background and is said to have originated from St. George.


Once upon a time there was a king and a queen. There was also a dragon who killed people. The dragon was very big and kept attacking the people. St George was very strong. He threw his sword into the dragon's mouth. He died. The princess and St. George were married. By Harshil


One fierce day a terrorizing dragon was eating the sheep, but there were no more sheep. So the king sent the villagers to the dragon to be eaten. The princess got caught by the dragon. Suddenly St. George came to help to attack the dragon. Then St. George married the princess. By Michael


Once upon a time there was a king and a lovely princess. They all lived happily. But the big and fierce dragon came. He lieved in a cold and wet cave. The king said "that dragon has to go!" St George a brave knight, heard what the king had said and made a sneaky plan to kill the dragon. That night, the dragon stole the princess and decided to eat her! The next morning, St George rode a white horse to the dragon's cold, wet cave. He yelled to the dragon "Hey dragon! First eat Mr. Axe." He threw it into the dragon's mouth. The dragon chocked on it and died. St George let the princess on his white horse and in ten minutes they were all safe in the castle. Next they got married.  By Connor

Chinese Dragons

The dragons have spikes and scales of a snake and cat whiskers. They have the legs of a tiger and claws of an eagle. They are sharp. They can fly in the sky and they can swim. They live on land. By Harshil


In Chine there are special dragons who are the guardians of China. Each dragon lives and guards stuff in China. There are metal dragons who protect jewellery. Next water dragons live in the water and protect China's sea monsters. Fire dragons protect fires and blow the fires out to keep China safe.  By Andre

Taniwha masterpieces

This week we made Taniwha masterpieces. First we had to draw the background and colour each section. We focused on colouring in the same direction, adding some shading and pressing hard so that the colours were bright. Next we drew a taniwha. Some of us chose to color our taniwha in the colours of our country's flag, others chose rainbow colours and some used their favourite colours. We hope you like them. They are hanging up in our class to protect us and be our guardians during our learning time.

Geek and Nerd Mufti Day

Today we dressed up as geeks and nerds. These are people who like to study a lot, but we learnt that they often become very rich like Bill Gates. They are also good at science and electronics. We need to learn more about clever people like scientists, rather than thinking pop stars and sport people are better. 

A good friend

Elmer the elephant

Elmer the Elephant trudged into the jungle. He went into a magic tree house and wished he had lots of colours. His wish came true. He saw a fire engine and the firemen said 'you can come with us to use your trunk and squeeze water out of your trunk.' Elmer saved the day.   By Michael

Elmer the Elephant has lots of colours. When Elmer was born he was grey. His Mum bought some jelly beans and he thought that they were peanuts. Next he ate them. He got the colours on his tummy. He went back home and his Dad said 'where did you get those colours?' So Elmer shared some colours with his family and friends.  By Harman

Elmer the Elephant trudged into the deep jungle. He found a very full jar of jelly beans. He ate every single one of them. When he got back, his friends were amazed with his colours so they went to the empty jelly bean jar and they all made a wish. They wished that they were colourful and the rainbow gave them some colours. They all lived happily ever after.  By Connor

Elmer the Elephant was a rainbow coloured elephant and he had a lot of colours on his body. He trudged into the jungle. Soon he found all of his friends and asked if they would play with him. But his friends said "no." They said he looked ridiculous but they knew that he had got his rainbow colours from some jelly beans because he had eaten them. The elephants laughed at him and he did not like it. He didn't want his rainbow colours anymore.  By Tanisha

Our explanations of Matariki

Matariki is when the seven star sisters come out in June. It is very important for the Maoris. When summertime has past, the Sun is tired so the stars help the Sun. You can see Matariki in the early morning. When the stars shine brightly that means it is going to be a warm winter. If the stars are dull it is going to be not a good winter.   By Michael


Matariki is when the Maori people celebrate New Year. Early in the morning in June, you can see the seven sisters in the blue sky. If you see the seven sisters and they shine that means it is going to be a good warm winter.   By Mellisa


Matariki is a festival in June when the Maori celebrate. Matariki can be seen early in the morning. In the festival, the Maoris do weaving, singing and carving. You can see the seven stars. Te Ra, the Sun, is tired after summer so the seven stars help. They say that if you see the stars that means it's going to be a nice winter and if you can't see them it's going to be wet and cold.  By Connor

Goldilocks and the three bears retelling

Today we worked on using other connectives than 'and then.' We had to use words like after that, next, so, in fact, but, now, quickly, finally and first. We also had to remember the sequence of the story and how to use speech marks.

Once upon a time there were three bears. The first bear was a Father Bear and there was also a Mother bear and a good Baby bear. On the other side of the forest there was Goldilocks. One day the three bears made some porridge but Father Bear said " my porridge is too hot" so they all went for a walk so it cools down. When they were gone, Goldilocks saw a rabbit so she chased it until she was lost. Her mother had said "do not go in to the woods" but she forgot that. Next she spied a house. It looked perfect so she knocked on the door but no one was there. So she went inside and she saw Father Bear's porridge.

There was a little girl called Goldilocks. She ran to the bears house and spied in at the window. She saw a little, middle and big bowl. Goldilocks opened the big door. She said "hello?" Next Goldilocks crept in the house. After that her tummy growled. She was about the gobble the big bowl of porridge, but it was too hot. Secondly, she was about to gobble the medium porridge but it was too gooey and cold. She tried to gobble the little bowl of porridge and it was fantastic.         By Harold

Once upon a time, there were three bears called Father bear, Mother bear and Baby bear. Mother bear made porridge. She put it into Father bear's bowl and her bowl. It was too hot and so Mother bear said "we should go for a walk." So the three bears went for a walk and along came Goldilocks. She went inside and she saw all the porridge. She tried all the porridge. She tried Baby bear's porridge. It was just right. So she went into the living room. She tried Father bear's chair, but it was too high. She tried Mother bear's chair but it was too soft. So she tried Baby bear's chair. It was just right, but it broke so she went upstairs. She tried Father bear's bed but it was too hard. So she tried Mother bear's bed but she fell into it. She tried Baby bear's bed and it was just right. She fell asleep and the bears came home from their walk.        By Amisha
