Venus our Pitcher Plant Pet

A Pitcher Plant is a plant. It eats flies. It is slippery and has water inside. When a fly is in the Pitcher Plant, it eats the fly. The Pitcher Plant is green and it has little red lines in the middle. It can't move. When the fly goes inside then the plant eats it. By Harshil

A Pitcher Plant is a plant that is dangerous to insects. It is a carnivourous plant. It is green inside and sometimes it can be slipper, then the insects fall inside. It needs water to grow. Inside the Pitcher Plant there is acid, liquid and mush. It makes mush from the insects. By Michelle

Nim's Island

We are reading the novel Nim's Island by Wendy Orr in class. We are also watching the movie starring Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster. We have been making slideshows about sea lions and iguanas. We are spotting differences between the book and the film. We have learnt about acting from Abigail. We drew Nim's Island by following a dictation of instructions from Ms K. We also imagined that we were Nim's Dad, who is shipwrecked, and wrote a letter from him to her.

Exposition writing

Today we tried our hand at exposition writing. This is when you write to present your point of view. Our subject was whether we thought PE kits were a good idea or not. 17 people thought PE kits were a good idea and 3 thought they were a bad idea. In our school all students from Yr1-6 have to change into their PE kit for fitness and sport.

I think students should have P.E. kits because when you do Jump Jam and you are wearing your uniform it can smell a lot. If you don't wear your P.E. kit and you are doing exercises you might get holes in your uniform. I think schools should have P.E. kits.    By Michelle

I think students should have P.E. kits because if you get very super sweaty you can get changed and be alright. It is thin so you don't get super hot. You can use it to not get as sweaty as Jetipeti. It is part of our school uniform so we have to wear it.  By Connor

Yumbo Gumbo Soup

We have been reading the big book Yumbo Gumbo soup. On these cold winter days a bit of soup is always warming. We each brought a vegetable and ended up with kumara, potato, carrot, capsicum and onion. We put bay leaves, peppercorns, an oxo chicken stock cube, a packet of gravy and a can of tomatoes in too. We cooked it for five hours in a crock pot. It smelt yum and kept the learning zone warm. Then we all tried some. Some of us thought it was yummy and ate it all up and others of us did not like it.

A magic purse

Today we wrote poems imagining what a magic purse would hold inside. Remember to click on the photos to make them larger and easier to read.

Taniwha masterpieces

This week we made Taniwha masterpieces. First we had to draw the background and colour each section. We focused on colouring in the same direction, adding some shading and pressing hard so that the colours were bright. Next we drew a taniwha. Some of us chose to color our taniwha in the colours of our country's flag, others chose rainbow colours and some used their favourite colours. We hope you like them. They are hanging up in our class to protect us and be our guardians during our learning time.

The holidays

Today we wrote a recount of our buddies holidays. We had to remember to write in the third person.

During the holidays Tanisha went to the pools. She went with her brother and her Mum. Then she went out of the pool and jumped into her teacher's arms. By Thaleisha

Connor is my buddy. He went to Queenstown and threw a snowball at his Dad. He went one more time to have fun and make a snowman. Then he went home and had pizza. By Andre

During the holiday Xuan went to her Aunty's house. They ate porridge and some tomato with eggs. She got her nails painted, She was happy and then she went home. By Michelle

I love the smell of...

We wrote about the smells that we liked after sharing our favourite smell with the class.
Ms Koltonowska's favourite smell is just after the rain has hit the ground.

A report on an object

We wrote reports on objects you can find around the classroom today.

Michael and Liam:
The sewing elephant has soft fur inside. It is used for relaxing. It smells like candy floss and lavender. It lives in the elephant box.

Michelle and Harshil:
A black vivid is what people use for going around the outline when we draw. Sometimes people use them for going around the pencil line. The black vivid lives in a pencil case.
