Dr Seuss Poems

We have written and illustrated some poems inspired by Dr Seuss. We were each given a chunk and had to brainstorm all the words which had that chunk. Then we wrote a poem from those words. We think they look fantastic! Come and see our display outside our classroom. They will be moving to the library in Wk 10 to stay on display all year.

Book Week Mufti Day

Today was mufti day. We all came dressed as book characters to celebrate Book Week. We have been reading lots of Dr Seuss stories and even wrote our own poems. The library has had lots of special events on during lunchtime and had a drawing competition.

Today we tried a Papaya or Pawpaw

Today we tried a papaya. We are learning about how our food gets from the field to the table. Papaya was first grown in Mexico. It grows on a tall tree, a bit like a coconut tree. We used all our senses to get a whole experience of this unusual fruit. Most of us liked how it tasted, even though it smelt like sick.

Today we had our first taste of the sport Squash. We had to practise our racquet and ball skills. We tried to balance a ball on a racquet and bounce a ball on the racquet. This required lots of hand to eye co-ordination!

Today it is my birthday. I am excited. I am going to have zebra cake at my house. All my friends came to my house at the weekend. We had a lot of fun. We played Pint the Tail on the Donkey and musical chairs. I won. We ate cake. By Diya

Butterfly emerging

We were lucky enough to see one of our pet caterpillars emerge as a butterly. It took almost five hours for it to fly away to freedom. We found out that butterflies live for six months. We were not allowed to touch it because it was pumping blood into its wings and we didn't want to damage them.

Fruit and Vegetables

Today we made a poster for fruit and vegetables. We had to draw a carrot, apple and cabbage using coloured paper. We then added some texture using pastels. Then we used bubble writing. Don't they look fantastic? You should eat five plus fruit and vegetables a day. Did you know a tomato is a fruit because it has seeds?

Crunch, crunch, munch, munch. That is all we can hear in our Learning Zone at the moment. We have five pet caterpillars which are happily chewing away at a Swan Plant. They are getting very fat and will soon turn into Monarch Butterflies. They are called Munch, Bunch, Crunch, Hunch and Lunch.

Our school year begins this Wednesday. We have 24 people in our Learning Zone to begin the year and range from the age of 5 years and 8 months to 6 years and 8 months. We can't wait to begin sharing our work with you all and look forward to lots of positive criticism and comments. For the first few weeks we are going to be learning all about our classmates and sharing our ideas and knowledge to begin our inquiry into 'Where does our food come from?'

Reindeer or Caribou

This week we are learning all about Reindeer. Did you know that Santa Claus only started using reindeer in the 19th Century? We also learnt that Rudolf was invented in 1939 by a shop who wanted to sell more things for Christmas. Did you know Reindeer means 'snow shuffler.' Reindeer are mammals that live in the North Pole, Asia, Russia and Europe. Males are called bulls and females are cows. A reindeer is a mammal. Some people call reindeer Caribou.

Reindeer have four legs, two brown eyes, two big enormous antlers and a small, small tail. They can be white, brown or grey. They have very wide hooves.

They eat mushrooms, lichen, a little bit of grass, berried and their babies drink their mummies' milk. They are born in May and June. They run away from wolves or fight with each other. All reindeer actually do is find shelter or find food or make babies. The Antlers fall off and reindeer grow new ones. By Connor

We have been reading a book called Chicken Food by Jill Eggleton. It is about chickens who refuse to eat slugs and bugs and crickets and worms unless they are made into a burger pattie for them. Today we made Rocking Roosters. We had to colour all the feathers, cut them out, glue them on and add a beak, eyes and lastly stick some feathers on.

A Pitcher Plant is a plant. It eats flies. It is slippery and has water inside. When a fly is in the Pitcher Plant, it eats the fly. The Pitcher Plant is green and it has little red lines in the middle. It can't move. When the fly goes inside then the plant eats it. By Harshil

The Arts Festival

This week is the Arts Festival at school. We have our Art displayed in the hall and on Thursday and Friday there is a performance of various music and dances. Yesterday we watched the dress rehearsal. Amisha is doing a poi dance and dancing in BoogieBods to Justin Beiber's song 'Baby.' Keisha is dancing in Bollywood. Kawiti is in the boys Haka group. Today, we went to look at the hall today and felt very proud to have our work displayed.

Today we finished our Art. We have been learning about Rememberance Day. That is like ANZAC day but in Europe people commemorate the end of the First World War. We read the poem 'In Flander's Fields' and learnt about the trenches. We learnt some new words like 'allies', 'alliance', 'trench', 'front' and 'poppy.'

Grandparents' Day

Today was Grandparents' Day. We had an assembly to showcase some of the things we do at school. We bet our school is very different to when our grandparents went to school. Well done to Andre who found out who is on all the notes of the new zealand currency. Today we had to solve sums involving how to add money together. It is hard to remember to put the dollar sign in front and the decimal place. We found that there are not many places on the web to find out about NZ money, so if you know of any please could you post a link in the comments. We tried www.sorted.org but it was a bit hard.

Scary Stories

Whenever I go to the amusement park my little brother makes me go to the Haunted House. It was dark and scary. There was a car. In the car, there was a flashlight and I picked it up and I pushed the button. The light went on. The car started to move very fast! I screamed. Then we came back. A Soul Cake

A Soul cake is a small round cake which is traditionally made for All Saints Day or All Souls' Day (1st November) to celebrate the dead. The cakes, often simply referred to as souls, were given out to soulers (mainly consisting of children and the poor) who would go from door to door on Hallowmass (31st October, now known as Halloween) singing and saying prayers for the dead. Each cake eaten would represent a soul being freed from Purgatory. The practice of giving and eating soul cakes is often seen as the origin of modern Trick or Treating. Ms K baked us some Soul Cakes on Sunday and we are learning about the real reasons for Halloween this week.

Today we celebrated Diwali, the Hindu festival, at school. We were allowed to wear our cultural saris and jewellery. Some of the teachers dressed up in saris and looked beautiful. We tried some Indian sweets and the teachers had a feast in the staff room. We read a big book about Diwali and learnt about what happens on each of the five days. We made flower garlands out of paper to give to our Mums and to some of the teachers.

LZ4's Memories Patchwork Quilt

Last term, we made a patchwork quilt to show our memories of the year in LZ4 so far. We have learnt about soccer, dragons, the Rugby World Cup, been on a tram which broke down, had a Cross Country race, made Spider drinks, learnt about insects like butterflies and spiders, met Jack Frost, had a Teddy Bears' picnic, and saw a big steam train at MOTAT.

Rugby World Cup 2011 Champions!!

Last night the All Blacks beat France in a very close game 8-7. After a long 24 year wait, this has made the All Blacks the World Champions at Rugby for the next four years. They won every match they played in the tournament. Tony Woodcock scored the only try.

We are proud to be New Zealanders and Kiwi kids no matter of our creed, colour, origins, language or religion.

Everyone thinks bears are cute, but they're not and they are dangerous. When there is no food for the bears they have to hunt everywhere. If they don't have food for a long time they won't survive. On Thursday we created some polar bear art. First we made glaciers out of newspaper. Then we used blue bits from magazines to collage the sky. Then we stuck some paper towel down and dyed it blue for the water. We also stuck some glitter paper on to make the water look shimmery. Next we practised drawing polar bears on newsprint before drawing the final bear on blue paper. We then used silver, white and yellow pastel to make it look like the polar bear's fur.

Today we learnt about halves. First we had to find half of a circle, square, rectangle, hexagon and a triangle, then we had to work out a half of some numbers. Ms K had a bonus question which was finding half of 462. Harold got the answer correct! We are practising halving big numbers which have even numbers in them like 682, 448.

Walk on Wednesdays

Teddy Bears' Picnic

Today we had 20 visitors come to our Learning Zone! It was so exciting. We learnt about where the name 'teddy' came from. Apparently in 1902 the USA President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear when bear hunting and a newspaper wrote about it. Then a toy maker started making bears and they have been popular ever since!

We had a shared morning tea with Tiny Teddy biscuits, fairy bread which was cut into the shape of teddies made by Andre's Mum, fried bread from Harshil's Mum, some sandwiches and a cookie from Michael's Mum and biscuits from Ben and Tanisha. We all made a sandwich with our toys and could choose from three fillings; vegemite, strawberry jam or runny honey. Then we met with all the other classes and went to the hall for a picnic. We sat on blankets and ate our sandwiches. The New Entrants had made teddy shaped biscuits for every single student in the Junior Learning Community! What a treat. We finished the day off with a rotation of Robbing the Nest, Rugby Skills and playing Musical statues and chairs.

Michael's News

On Friday Michael went to Hamilton with his Dad and his Dad's boss to watch the All Blacks play Japan. He brought the tickets in to class to show us. They cost $ 194 each! But it was worth seeing the All Blacks. Michael's favourite player is Richie McCaw. The All Blacks won the game. Michael brought in a magazine to share with the class.

Connor is Player of the Year 2010 and 2011!

Connor plays soccer on Sundays at Howick Soccer Club. His team is called United Fencibles. His shirt is black and orange. He went to prize-giving and was awarded a medal for being the Player of the Year for 2011! Well done Connor.

Wohooo Alaska! Blog goal.

We have now had a post from Alaska, Russia, South Africa and South America. We are still hoping to get a star on our map from Greenland and Antarctica. Ms K has decided to extend the timeline from end of Term 3, to December 2011. Next term we will write to the Antarctic centre in Christchurch to see if they can help us with our mission. Seeing as we have already had hot chips this term, Ms K thinks a shared lunch of food from around the world in the last week of the school year would be more appropriate.

Today Ms K bought chips for our buddy class and our learning zone. She ordered $18 worth of chips, but accidently the Fish and Chip shop man made $80! Ms K didn't know what to do. She felt sorry for him, so she bought $40! Now we have full tummies but Ms K has no grocery money for the week! It was a nice surprise.

1. Were you good at writing books when you started? From Connor

Writing is like all other skills - you get better at it with practice. But sometimes you can be lucky and start with a story that seems to be easier to write than some of the ones that come later. (Ark in the Park was the third book I wrote, even though it was the fifth book published, and it is nearly exactly the same as my first draft.)

2. Who are you supporting in the Rugby World Cup, Canada, France or Australia? From Ms K

(Very quietly) Canada. But what I love best is watching the haka.

3. Did you go to Auckland for the opening of the World Cup? From Michael

No, but I saw a bit of it on the plane coming from the Brisbane Writers Festival.

4. Where do you live in Australia? From Kawiti

On the Mornington Peninsula, which is south of Melbourne.

5. What is your favourite movie? From Liang

We are reading the novel Nim's Island by Wendy Orr in class. We are also watching the movie starring Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster. We have been making slideshows about sea lions and iguanas. We are spotting differences between the book and the film. We have learnt about acting from Abigail. We drew Nim's Island by following a dictation of instructions from Ms K. We also imagined that we were Nim's Dad, who is shipwrecked, and wrote a letter from him to her.

Today we tried our hand at exposition writing. This is when you write to present your point of view. Our subject was whether we thought PE kits were a good idea or not. 17 people thought PE kits were a good idea and 3 thought they were a bad idea. In our school all students from Yr1-6 have to change into their PE kit for fitness and sport.

I think students should have P.E. kits because when you do Jump Jam and you are wearing your uniform it can smell a lot. If you don't wear your P.E. kit and you are doing exercises you might get holes in your uniform. I think schools should have P.E. kits. By Michelle

I think students should have P.E. kits because if you get very super sweaty you can get changed and be alright. It is thin so you don't get super hot. You can use it to not get as sweaty as Jetipeti. It is part of our school uniform so we have to wear it. By Connor

Romanian Art: Costel Larca

Romanian artist Costel Iarca captured attention on the international art scene for a patented application technique that leaves the canvas textured and three-dimensional. This procedure involves layering latex caulk and acrylic paint, giving depth and definition to the surface of his unique abstract and figurative paintings. Cross Country

Ms Koltonowska's Yr 2's have WON the cross country in 2009 and 2010. The pressure was on. This year Mellisa came 1st for the Yr3 girls and Harshil came 2nd for Yr 3 boys race. Connor came 2nd for the Yr 2 boys race. Well done my champions. One gold and two silver medals is an awesome result from 19 students who ran. For everyone who crossed the finish line- well done! We are a winning team.

Professor Flumf the Great Explorer

We have been reading a book about Professor Flumf, a famous explorer who finds treasure on an island. He is a bit forgetful and leaves his suitcase at the airport, his compass in his sailboat and his camera on the plane. He recieved a letter from a Pharoah inviting him to visit the pyramids of Giza. We wrote a reply pretending that we were Professor Flumf.

Teddy Bears

This week we read Grumpy Bear by Jill Eggleton. We wrote letters to Grumpy Bear asking him why he couldn't sleep and making suggestions about what he could do. We thought he could have a hot honey milk drink, or snuggle up to a hot water bottle, or put ear muffs on to block out the noise that the birds, bees and mice were making. We also thought he was a bit mean and rude to shout at the other animals and suggested he said sorry and threw them a party. We also did some stunning art on Thursday which is now on display in our Learning Zone.

Keisha did some research last night about the Romanian flag and why it is red, yellow and blue. Well done for being pro-active in your research!

The flag is blue to represent vigilance, truth and justice.

Yellow stands for generosity.

Red represents strength, bravery and the blood split during the revolution.

Each Learning Zone in our school had to select a name of a country playing in the Rugby World Cup 2011 to support and learn about. This morning Connor chose Romania out of a hat during assembly. None of us know anything about Romania. Our teacher's heritage is Polish and Poland is quite close. In week 5 and 6 we will learn about Romania and share our new knowledge. We will also have a mufti day where we will look like Romanians. If you know anything about Romania feel free to comment and share.

Zumba Award

Well done to Mellisa! She got a certificate for her efforts for Zumba ACE. Mellisa is a keen gymnast and a natural dancer, who shows talent at an early age.

Well done to Amisha! She is the only person from LZ4 who was talented enough in dance to be selected for Mrs Nyahore's Boogie Bods who will be showcasing at the Howick Dance Festival at Elim College. Amisha also exhibits the value of responsibility, is helpful in class and has been trying very hard in her learning. Well done!

We made information posters about what life was like in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. We had to read a book in a group, decide what to write about and then rewrite what we had read without plagarising (that means copying straight out of the book).

Howick Historical Village recounts...

At school we came in and packed our bags and the bus came. Then we climbed on to it and we drove to Howick Historical Village. Only the people who are 6 and 7 could go. We played with wooden horses, stick, bowling and stilts. We explored the village. We saw tents, shops and wooden things. There were old places. We made butter with Mrs Pots. Yesterday LZ4, LZ1, LZ6 and LZ5 went to the Howick Historical Village. First LZ4 and LZ1 went to make butter. We saw how Mrs Pots made the butter. First there was cream inside the glass and we sang a song, but on cold days the cream takes a long time to turn into butter. By Amisha

On Tuesday 2011, the Yr 2s went to the Howick Historical Village. It was old, cold, different and fragile. It was cold and damp. My favourite past was when Mrs Hill taught us some outside games like bowling, wooden horses, triple sticks, stilts and skipping. To me, the bowling was the super best. We learnt about parlour games, how to make butter, the toys children played with a hundred years ago and explored the village. We hope you enjoy our photos! Cass the Colour Robber

This week our big book was Cass the Colour Robber. It is about a thief who uses his colour stick to zap all the colour from the world. Then he goes for a walk and notices that everything is grey. This makes him feel sad, so he decides to give back all the colours to the world. However, whilst in his sack all the colours got mixed up and come out as rainbows making everything rainbow coloured. We wrote colour poems inspired by the book.

Next we created some Art. On Tuesday we learnt how to draw Cass. Ms K showed us step-by-step how to draw him. Then she went over our pictures with a black felt-tip. On Thursday we drew our mountains and used charcoal to make shadows. We also drew the grass. On Friday Ms K drew a rainbow for each of us to colour in. We learnt about the correct order of the rainbow colours. We can remember it by saying "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain" or remembering the name ROY G. BIV.

Some of the adults in our school didn't believe that we had done our art! We think that Art can be edited, like a book is proofread and edited before it is published. We now feel confident at Art and believe in our talents. We love our pictures. Come see them in the Earth Studio in Week 2.

One rainy afternoon Ricky, AJ, Mum, my sister and me went to Botany movie theatre. We watched Cars 2. We were in the very front row. It was a movie about top agents. There was a naughty professor who was trying to take over the world but Flinn was an agent. He was stopping those dumb dumb babies. They were good at making machines go nuts. It was awesome. My sister did not like it. We had popcorn and it was yummy. By Connor

One sunny day, I went to Myah's house in the afternoon. When I got to her house I was really excited. I got my cool fairy dress and Myah has the same one. Myah's parents were also there too. Libby is Myah's mum and Andy is Myah's dad. Myah and me enjoyed playing so much we started to get hungry and a bit bored. So we ate some cheese in bread and we watched Beauty and the Beast. In a while, the doorbell rang and it was my dad and he said "come on Tanisha we have to go home." When I got home I said to my parents I has a great time at Myah's house and I enjoyed it so so much. Term 3 Challenge update

A while ago, Ms K set a challenge to get visitors from South America, South Africa, Greenland, Antarctica and Russia. If we succeed then the class will have a special reward. So far we have had visitors from Russia, South Africa and South America. That leaves Greenland and Antarctica. We will have to work out a way for people from these places to view our blog. Any suggestions are welcome? Ms K is going to contact the Antarctica centre in Christchurch to see if they know how to help us achieve our goal.
